Stallone, 80, who wrote the screenplay, said the film’s budget had been exhausted when he realised the original ending was too much of a downer. It tells the story of an uneducated, working-class debt collector and part-time club boxer from Philadelphia who is unexpectedly given a once-in-a-lifetime shot to fight the world heavyweight champion. The film ends after the fight climax. Speaking on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, to promote his new autobiography titled The Steps, he said of the previous ending: “It's really interesting because at the very end, Rocky walks out and he's with Adrian and there's trash everywhere. “People have seen the fight and had gone home and they're basically forgotten. “Like 10 minutes later that moment passed and I was like, ‘This is kind of depressing. My God, wow.’ “Actually, the picture on the poster is that scene we're talking about, which is not even in the movie. “I begged the producer. I said, ‘We got to end on a high note.’ “He said, ‘We have no money.’ I said, ‘Well, we'll figure it out.’ “ We went out, went around, asked a few friends. “Got about 12 people (as extras) and we couldn't even build a ring. We built maybe 10 feet. It's plywood and the ropes are sagging. “We're like holding the ropes up. And then we just said, ‘Keep walking in a circle. Walk in a circle, walk in a circle.’ “And Rocky's, ‘Yo, get that thing out of my face.’ “And then Adrian comes in the ring and he goes, ‘Where's your hat?’ “And I went, ‘there it is’. “He doesn't care about the fight.
